Testing Requirements

Louisiana requires that all new teachers are "highly qualified according to the standards established under the federal No Child Left Behind Act. To meet this standard, you must pass the following exams prior to enrollment in TNTP Academy:

Participants must also pass the following exams before applying for a Level 1 Teaching Certificate:

  • Principles of Learning and Teaching (all teachers)
  • Praxis Teaching Reading Exam (teachers pursuing certification in elementary education, special education, or early childhood education)

Praxis I

The Praxis I Pre-Professional Skills Test measures basic skills in reading, writing and mathematics and includes multiple-choice questions as well as an essay question on the writing portion of the exam. The test is designed to evaluate whether you have the academic skills needed to be a successful teacher.

Prior to enrollment in TNTP Academy, you must take and pass all three sections of the Praxis I (reading, writing and math) or submit official documentation demonstrating that you have met one of the following exemptions:

  • An official ACT score report with a composite score of 22 or above
  • An official SAT score report with a combined verbal and math score of 1030 or above
  • An official master’s degree transcript from a regionally accredited college/university

Praxis II

The Praxis II Subject Assessments measures your general and subject-specific teaching skills and knowledge as well as content knowledge in the specific subject area that you will teach. Upon enrolling in one of TNTP's three partner programs, you should receive guidance regarding which subject area exam you are required to pass.

Praxis: Principles of Learning and Teaching

The Principles of Learning and Teaching is designed to assess your knowledge in key areas needed to be successful as a beginning teacher. These may include topics related to human growth and development, classroom management, instructional design and delivery techniques, evaluation and assessment, and other job-related skills. Since such knowledge is typically acquired during teacher preparation, many participants choose to take the PLT after completing at least one semester of TNTP Academy. Please note that you must take the PLT by the April test date in order to be eligible to apply for a Level 1 Teaching Certificate upon completion of the program.
